The Lowering Job

It didn't take long for me to save up to get my lowering job. I HAD to do it quickly. The ride was terrible as standard, and it looked bad....
So a few calls were made and I chose to go to Beetle-Link in Farnham. (BIG MISTAKE! Explain why here)
1 whole Week later.. (I know!) and it was sunk in the weeds by the power of a new beam with Sway-Away Adjusters welded in and turned to the max! :-)
I'd measured the lowest point of the car (The beam) before hand, and I measured it now, and it was 6inches lower!!! The lowest point was now 2inches from the ground. Fortunately the beam runs directly between the wheels so speed humps are not a problem as the beam will be 2inches off the ground all the way over it. It's when you come across something that has to only pass under the centre of the car.
The rear end of the car was lowered by a friend of mine Brian Galpin who had a wicked split camper (that can be seen on the cool runners display at the Basingstoke classic Motoring show '97..). This was done by simply taking the rear swing arm off and putting it on a bit further round.

She looks more like a fun beetle now don't you think? I wanted some early sloping front lights, but couldn't afford the conversion just yet, so I stuck these Eyebrows on as they look cool. Give the car some character.  This was till one fell off so that was that... Later in 2001 it was gonna get sloping lights anyway...

You may also notice the Pea Shooters are gone as I went for a system that uses a Four into one Header system and then the box gets routed round, up, and out of the way then the exit pipe goes up and over the box and points down under the wing.
This system gives you the desired amount of pipe work and a performance 'box but puts it out of the way to aid ground clearance. To see a picture of this system off car click HERE.

Here is the proof that the car really is 2inches off the ground at it's lowered point.

Things that cause a problem on the road:
Litter - If a can or a bottle is in the road, most cars would drive over it. This will just push it along in front like a snow plow.
I also have to avoid Cats eyes, and Thick painted white lines....

It's also made the car a real bone shaker and will knock your fillings out on anything other than a perfectly smooth road.

But it does make it go round corners quite nicely!  :-)

The car stayed pretty much like this right through till '97 when it showed off with the club as a classic motoring show, then shortly got a shot in the tail with a 2000cc Porsche 914 / VW Type 4 engine...
